Frequent Flyer Training Updates

Here are some of the recent changes to loyalty programs and new updates we’ve made to the Frequent Flyer Solutions training as of 3 November 2021.

As a reminder, Business & First Class members enjoy unlimited access to the Frequent Flyer Solutions training program. If you’re a Premium Economy or Economy member, you can access the first unit of every course for free or upgrade your membership to gain full access!

Velocity reinstates partner airline redemptions

On 2 November, Velocity Frequent Flyer reopened Reward Seat redemptions on Virgin Australia international flights and six partner airlines for the first time since April 2020. We’ve updated Unit 2.2.2 (Redeem Velocity Points) and Unit 5.2.2 (Find Virgin Australia & Partner Airline Award Availability).

There have been some changes to Velocity carrier charges, which are now reflected in Unit 5.1.3 (Avoid Fuel & Carrier Surcharges).

Australia’s international border reopens

On 1 November, Australia finally removed the outbound travel ban and NSW, VIC & ACT removed quarantine requirements for vaccinated international arrivals. We’ve updated Unit 10.2.7 (Travel in a Post-COVID World) extensively with information about Australia’s new domestic and international travel arrangements.

New section on the best Australian credit cards for earning points

We’ve added a new section on the best Australian credit cards to Unit 3.2.4 (Choosing a Credit Card) to give you even more useful information to help you choose a new credit card! This section now also includes unbiased analysis on the best credit cards for earning Qantas points, Velocity points and KrisFlyer miles, with the top-earning cards ranked according to their earning potential.

We continuously update the Credit Card Master List in Unit 3.2.4 (Choosing a Credit Card), as well as current Australian credit card sign-up offers in Unit 3.3.1 (Bonus Sign-up Points), at the start of every month. This was last updated on 3 November 2021.

New airline status matches

We’ve added information about new airline status match offers for airlines including Air Canada, ITA Airways (which is now part of SkyTeam – see below) and Virgin Atlantic to Unit 8.1.3 (Status Matches).

We’ve also updated the section on American Airlines AAdvantage status challenges in Unit 8.1.4 (Status Challenges) with details of their new offer.

Changes to the SkyTeam alliance

Italy’s former flag carrier Alitalia left the SkyTeam alliance on 14 October 2021. Alitalia has been replaced by a new airline called ITA Airways, which announced it was joining the SkyTeam alliance (replacing Alitalia) in late October. Training units including Unit 1.1.3 (Airline Alliances) have been updated.

Changes to Virgin Australia’s Accelerate program

Virgin Australia has refreshed its Accelerate loyalty program for small-to-medium businesses, changing the membership criteria & fare discounts, and removing annual travel credits. Velocity Pilot Gold memberships are still offered to new members. Unit 9.3.2 (Virgin Australia Accelerate) updated.

More loyalty program status extensions into 2022

We continue to update Unit 8.1.6 (COVID-19 Status Extensions) as more airline & hotel loyalty programs announce additional status extensions for members. Over the past month, American Airlines AAdvantage, Marriott Bonvoy and IHG Rewards have announced additional status extensions for members into 2022.
